Comics in Illustrator
You will be creating an original comic in Illustrator. You can start with a drawing you do on paper, or you can draw directly in Illustrator.
Guidelines are as follows:
Guidelines are as follows:
- Your comic must have at least seven different types of panels. Use seven different strategies from Wally Wood (below) to create variety in your comic.
- If you repeat the same type of panel, you will need to make enough panels that you use seven different strategies.
- Your comic may be serious, silly, sad, pointless, funny, etc. You can make a comic about your walk to school, it does not have to be an important story.
- You may make your comic about almost anything you want, as long as it is school appropriate. You are old enough to know what this means.
- You may use any style to make you comic, including drawing your own characters or tracing photos. Do not trace other comics or characters.
- Your comic must be understandable, anyone reading your comic should be able to know what is happening in every panel.
- When you are laying out your panels on pages, you must fill whole pages. You may make as many pages as you need, but do not make any half pages.
- Your layout must make sense for the content of your comic. Big panels are for very important scenes.
- You will not be graded on how "good" your story is or how "good" your drawing skills are. However, no stick-figures. Your grade is based on framing and layout.
- Color is optional, but you can not turn in a line drawing- you will have to use the paint bucket tool.
- Not every frame needs text. When you have text, it should fit in the panel and be readable.
You have a lot of freedom with this comic, just make sure that it is understandable and the choices you make are appropriate. The way you draw your panels should fit with the theme and subject of your comic, the way you lay out your panels should fit with the theme and subject of your comic.

- Is your illustration original? Does it reflect your message and headline?
- Do you have consistent spacing in your margins?
- Are there two or less font alignments used?
- Are there three or less fonts used?
- Did you limit your color palette?
- Does your overall design align with your message?
"Whatever You Want" Project
Your next project will be a "Whatever You Want" project. Just like as it sounds, the project you make will be about whatever you want it to be about. Choose a topic you are interested in, and make some kind of artwork about it! There are some guidelines, and some things I will be looking for. Here they are:
Finding a new skill from a tutorial:
Part of this project will be to learn a new skill or tool on your own. Look for tutorials on the internet. Find a tutorial that looks interesting to you, and spend some time trying it out. You do NOT have to finish the tutorial, you just need to learn one new tool or skill and use it in your project. Do not spend more than one day doing a tutorial. You can find tutorials by doing a google search. Be careful not to choose downloads that require you to download files or purchase anything.
You can start by looking at these sites:

- Must be done in Photoshop or Illustrator (or both)
- Must be US Paper, or Letter sized document.
- You must learn a new skill in Photoshop or Illustrator, and use it in your project (more on that below)
- You MUST work on it everyday until 4/11. - no "I'm finished" before then
